Our mission

Clear Pathways, an initiative of the World Nuclear Transport Institute, helps keep essential radioactive materials moving safely and without unnecessary delay. We are focused on the practical barriers that delay and deny shipments of essential radioactive materials. When a delay or denial is reported, we act on it: engaging with carriers, ports, airports, customs and regulators to help resolve the issue and understand what caused it. Each case adds to the evidence we use to address the underlying causes, so that the same barrier is less likely to stop the next shipment.

Alongside this, we make complex transport requirements easier to navigate, connect the stakeholders involved in each journey, and build confidence and understanding among communities and partners in the safe and responsible transport of the materials that healthcare, energy, agriculture and industry depend on.

Our vision

A world where the transport of radioactive materials is understood, trusted and enabled across every border, so that the healthcare, energy, agriculture and industry that depend on them are never obstructed.

Backed by the industry that moves it.

The World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI) is the global voice of the nuclear and radioactive materials transport industry.

Bringing together leading companies and experts from across the sector, WNTI works to promote safe, secure and sustainable transport worldwide. Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, the Institute helps bridge the gap between policy and practice, supporting its members and the wider community in meeting the highest standards of performance and public confidence.

What moves us forward.

Clarity

We turn complex regulatory, safety and transport information into guidance people can understand and act on with confidence.

Confidence

We build trust in the safe movement of radioactive materials through accurate, transparent and consistent communication.

Responsibility

We put safety and compliance first, and never lose sight of the patients, communities and industries that depend on these materials.

Coordination

We bring governments, regulators, carriers, industry and communities together to reduce fragmentation and solve problems collectively.

Practical support

We focus on real-world transport challenges, including delayed and denied shipments, compliance gaps and regional differences, and on solutions that work.

Global perspective

We support international cooperation and consistent understanding across routes, regions and regulatory systems.

Supporting

  • Healthcare
  • Energy
  • Agriculture
  • Industry

Radioactive materials are essential to modern life. They diagnose and treat disease, generate low-carbon electricity, protect crops and food supplies, sterilise medical products, and keep industrial and safety systems running.

Yet these shipments are too often delayed or denied. Perceived risk, complex compliance requirements, differing national rules and limited familiarity with radioactive materials can all stand in the way, even when a shipment is fully safe and compliant. When that happens, the consequences reach far beyond the supply chain: treatments are postponed, projects stall and services are disrupted.

Clear Pathways was created by the World Nuclear Transport Institute to change this. Drawing on WNTI's international transport expertise, we provide clear information, practical guidance and a trusted point of coordination, so that everyone involved can understand the requirements, respond to challenges and keep essential materials moving.

This work depends on knowing where the barriers are. When a shipment is delayed or denied, we want to hear about it, so we can help resolve it and build the evidence needed to prevent it happening again. These reports are evidence. Evidence is how policy changes, and how the next shipment gets through.

The pathway ahead.

  1. Understand
    the barriers

We gather real experiences of delayed and denied shipments to identify the recurring challenges and where support is needed.

  2. Connect
    the people

We bring together the governments, regulators, carriers, ports and airports involved in each journey to share knowledge, clarify requirements and work through problems collectively.

  3. Support
    practical solutions

We turn complex regulatory, safety and transport information into guidance people can understand and act on, and we engage directly with the organisations involved to help resolve the issues affecting essential shipments.

  4. Turn experience
    into progress

We use the evidence gathered to address the underlying causes, strengthen understanding and help prevent future delays.
